FAQs

Processing times

The processing of an application can take several weeks to months. Unfortunately, it is not possible to give an exact time frame. Please note that it may not be possible to be admitted in the semester you have applied for. The University therefore recommends that you submit your application with all the necessary documents as early as possible. The University of Graz takes no responsibility for the organization of your studies, e.g. visa appointments, relocation planning, etc.

The application review is an administrative procedure that is subject to legal requirements. This includes first checking the formal requirements (e.g. required certifications) and only then the content requirements can be checked. The review can therefore take some time.

No! Applications are only processed chronologically. Therefore, when planning your studies (e.g. visa, accommodation, student residence, grants/scholarships), please bear in mind that it may take several months to process your application.

Applying for additional studies

Please send an email to studienabteilung(at)uni-graz.at within the admission deadlines

with the following details:

- Your full name

- Your matriculation number

- Name of the degree program you wish to start

- That you would like to start your studies in this semester

If applicable, send additional documents relevant to your studies (e.g. confirmation that you have passed the admission procedure for restricted programs) as a PDF file

As long as you are at VGUH, you must submit an application. You can enter the application data via your student account under "my application" and must then send the complete and correct documents to the Admissions Office

If you want to study another master's program you have to hand in an application. For master's programs, the content requirements only can be evaluated based on an application.

Documents

No! Applications that are not submitted completely and correctly will not be processed. Therefore, do not apply until you have all documents, certifications and language certificates. Only complete applications will be processed!

No, this is actually prohibited by law! When applying via an agency, the applicant is excluded from applying for two semesters.

No! Legalizations are required by law. If these are not met, the documents have no legal value. Therefore, documents without the necessary legalization cannot be processed.

You can find information on the necessary notarization here.

No! We can only check whether an admission is possible or not on the basis of scans of the originals.

If the original documents are not issued in German or English, a translation must also be provided. The translation can be in German or English. The translation does not replace the original. Both must be submitted.

The translation must be prepared by a court-certified translator.

Translations from Austria as well as from abroad are accepted.

No! We always need the originals together with the corresponding translations. Translations alone are not sufficient.

No! Applications are only possible after completion of the previous studies.

In any case, proof must be provided that the degree program has been fully completed. As a gesture of goodwill, the university may accept a provisional certificate up to one year after graduation.

If the degree was completed more than one year ago, a final diploma must be available. Under no circumstances will we accept provisional certificates if it has been more than one year since graduation!

Only if the degree was completed less than one year ago. If the degree was completed more than one year ago, provisional certificates cannot be accepted.

Application

The application together with all necessary documents must be submitted online using the application tool provided. Documents must be uploaded as a legible PDF document.

If you have never studied at the University of Graz before, you must first create a basic account in order to be able to upload an application.

Please note that not all degree programmes can be activated in the application tool at the same time. Degree programmes with restricted access can only be activated for online application once the result of the admission procedure has been determined.

Information on the admission procedure can be found here.

Information on the admission procedure for the teaching degree programme can be found here.

Please note the different application deadlines for degree programmes with restricted admission.

Even if you are not yet taking part in the admission procedure, you can only apply once the admission procedure has been completed. It is not possible to upload an application before then.

The application number is assigned to you by the application tool as you create the application. If you cannot find the application number for various reasons, you can enter the applicant number instead (applicant number starts with "2", application number starts with "1").

Language(s)

Language skills at C1 according to Cerf are required to start a study program.

No! No application is possible without a language certificate.

No. According to the Universities Act, the language certificate is a prerequisite for submitting an application. Without the certificate, the application cannot be processed and will therefore be assessed as a negative application. Therefore, please only apply once you have the language certificate, as otherwise it will not be possible to submit another application for the same semester and degree programme.

No! Certificates that are older than 2 years cannot be considered.

No! We can only accept the language certificates that are approved by the Rectorate`s Decree.

No. A German certificate is only required if your previous education was not in German.

Please note that it must be clear from the educational documents that the language of education was German. Otherwise, a confirmation issued by the educational institution (e.g. university) for German being the language of instruction must also be submitted with the applciation documents.

No! Citizenship is not sufficient proof of language skills. The Austrian Universities Act explicitly requires proof of language proficiency in German in the form of an Austrian (or equivalent) Matura or a generally recognized language certificate that is not older than two years.

For all other countries, a university degree with the medium of instruction English cannot be considered as proof of language proficiency. One of the above-mentioned language certificates with the corresponding number of points and not older than 2 years is required.

No. The points are a minimum number of points. Admission with fewer points is not possible.

No. The university does not offer language courses for applications. You must obtain the certificate required for the application on your own.

Application deadlines

There are two semesters, summer and winter semester. Dates and deadlines can be found here.

The application period is only open for one semester at a time. This means that you can only apply for the semester that is currently open. It is not possible to apply for another, later semester. The semester is therefore already specified in the online application management system. If you would like to apply for a different semester, you must wait for the application period for that semester to open.

No, applications are only possible for the semester for which the application period is currently open.

No, applications are only possible for the semester for which the application period is currently open.

Enrollment and admission letter

If you do not want to enrol in the semester you have been admitted, you do not need to do anything for now. Do not take the necessary steps to enrol until the semester for which you wish to enrol!

You do not have to inform the university that you wish to enrol later.

Admission letters are generally valid indefinitely. This means that as long as there are no changes to the admission regulations (e.g. changes to the curriculum), you can still enrol one or two semesters after you have received the notification.

In cases where changes to the curriculum are already known, the admission letter will explicitly state that admission is only possible for a limited period of time.

You will find the "Application for enrollment" in your online application. You must sign this and send it to the Admissions Office so that enrolment can take place.

The application is valid for the semester for which the enrolment period is currently open. You should therefore only send the application for enrollment during the enrolment period for the semester in which you actually wish to enrol.

You register directly at the Vorstudienlehrgang (VGUH) with the admission letter you received from the university. Once the VGUH has received your payment, it will send the university your data sheet by email. Only then can the university enroll you. You will receive your payment information and matriculation number from us by email.

You do not have to come to the university! Communication takes place directly between the VGUH and the university.
