Remission of tuition fees

As a general rule, all students at Austrian universities are required to pay tuition fees.

Exceptions to this rule are students who are exempt from tuition fees for a specific period or on a permanent basis.

During the so-called ‘contribution-free period’*, full-time students from an EU or EEA country, recognised refugees, and students from other countries who are treated as equivalent to EU or EEA citizens do not have to pay tuition fees. However, all students must still pay the ÖH contribution (student contribution) every semester.

*The tuition-free period is the minimum duration of your degree programme plus two additional semesters.

Anyone who exceeds the period of exemption from tuition fees during their standard course of study must pay tuition fees.
The tuition fee per semester is:

  • €363.36 for students from an EU or EEA country, as well as for students from other countries who are treated as EU/EEA citizens
  • €726.72 for students from other third countries

The ÖH fee (student union fee) is always added on top and must be paid every semester.

Applications

  • for the summer semester by 28/29 February and
  • for the winter semester by 30 September

.

If you intend to apply for a tuition fee remission, you do not need to pay the tuition fee before this deadline.

You submit your application for remission online and upload your documents electronically. Applications can be submitted directly via your UNIGRAZonline account (under ‘Online Applications’ in the Academic Affairs) or via this website (homepage, ‘Tuition Fees’ section, bottom of the page).

If the application for remission is approved, you are exempt from the tuition fee but must still pay the ÖH contribution.

If the requirements for a tuition fee remission are not met, the prescribed tuition and ÖH fees must be paid.

If the application for remission cannot be submitted by the deadline, the prescribed tuition and ÖH fees must be paid. Afterwards, there is still the option to apply for a reimbursement of the tuition fees.
